A New Year and a New Beginning!

Since my last post was at the end of November, let me do my best to pick up there...

We spent a fun and relaxing Thanksgiving at Andy's parents and even though it was a quick trip there and home, we managed to pack a lot of fun (and food) in a short amount of time. :)

December marked the beginning of an extremely busy time for us. Not only were we preparing for Christmas in our household, but we were also gearing up for our busiest season at church. Just as we were getting close to Christmas week and feeling like we were finally "getting there", one by one we dropped like flies with the flu. When I say "flu", I mean, influenza, not just a little stomach bug. It was horrific. Chloe ended up with a secondary infection and Andy and Bella were probably the sickest I've seen either of them. I fared the best out of everyone, but still had a few moments when I was sure I was going to die. ;) Poor Bella had the worst of it on Christmas morning and did her best to enjoy the festivities, but she was just miserable. None of us felt great, so Christmas ended up being a very low key day at the McMinns and in the end, it was just what we all needed.

That brought us right into the New Year which was another low key celebration with a few friends. We celebrated "New York" style which meant we rang in the New Year at 9:00 with the East Coast and were home and in bed well before the clock struck midnight. ;)

While it's always hard to believe that another year has gone by, we couldn't have been happier to say good-bye to 2010. In many ways it was one of the toughest years we have endured as a family and the hope of a new year was already in our sights. Even if I tried I'm not sure I could fully express what last year was like for us, but in the end we have realized that God allows us to go through some very dark and hurtful times to prepare us for the next thing He has in store for us. There were several times that we literally felt like we were at our breaking point, just one more thing and we would be undone, and guess what...every time we felt that way, not only was it "one more thing", but more like "one after the other"...it seemed relentless at times and undoubtedly only through our strength in Christ did was somehow manage to muddle our way through, determined to maintain our character and convictions.

In the midst of these trials, something very powerful was also happening...Andy began to feel a very strong and urgent call to full time ministry. He's always talked about eventually "retiring and working at the church", but it was always something that was far away, in what seemed like an instant, it went from some day to NOW! I have to admit that it was a little scary for both of us, but we couldn't deny what was happening. It was like God all of a sudden said, "your time is now and you are on a fast track, so hold on!" And "hold on" is what we did. We counseled with those closest to us, prayed and as hard as it was started to take some significant steps in faith. The "plan" that we came up with had so many factors in it that it seemed close to impossible for everything to actually work out, especially in a short amount of time. As soon as we had our "plan" things around us began to unravel even further and as the months went by it felt like more doors were closing than opening. As discouraged as we became, there was still something that kept us moving forward.

And then as if a switch were flipped, amazing things began to happen! Road blocks that seemed absolutely impossible to overcome, simply started to fall down in front of us. Each and every detail of our "plan" started to simply work out. It was so much all at once that we were completely overwhelmed, but in an absolutely different way from the rest of the year, in a way that makes you stand back and just watch God work knowing that you have no control over any of it. There were still some "tense" moments as we waited for things to happen at the absolutely last minute possible, but none-the-less, they happened...and in a way that was so much better than we could have ever imagined. The things that we had prayed...no begged for, were finally happening and we were humbled beyond belief.

Now that we look back, we can see how even in the worst of times, God was orchestrating something amazing in our lives, but December 18th marked the beginning of absolute outpouring of God's blessing in our lives. After a little over 2 years of praying for God to bless us with another child, a second miscarriage and 6 rounds of clomid which were all unsuccessful, on a "hunch" I took a pregnancy test and much to our surprise it was clearly positive! As scared as I was there was something deep within me that assured me that this was the child we had been praying and waiting for. We waiting until after Christmas and our first appointment to begin telling those closest to us and slowly but surely we have been more and more comfortable in sharing our news. After our appt. this week we are ready to "tell the world!" :) We have been able to see our sweet baby go from a little flickering heartbeat on the screen at just 6 weeks pregnant, to something that began to resemble a baby at 8 weeks, to a cute little alien baby with arms and legs bouncing around at 10 weeks!

As is par for the course for me, I have been feeling terrible for quite some time, but know that as tough as it is sometimes, it's all worth it. I am counting down the days until I'm out of my first trimester, knowing that the next phase of pregnancy seems to settle very well with me. This time is has been significantly different for me though...instead of vomiting from morning till night, I have instead been terribly nauseous all of the time...even while sleeping. Having now experienced both, I'm honestly am not sure which one is worse?? My migraines have also really picked up and in my attempt to keep my body and growing baby free of any possible contaminants, I have opted not to take anything for them...there is nothing that is considered "safe" in pregnancy, only meds that seem to be okay for the most part. I've visited with my doctor about it and we've agreed to see what happens once I'm out of my first trimester as he shared with me that a lot of times people who suffer from migraines have an increase during their first trimester due to the hormonal shift, but see them reduced significantly after those first few months. So like I said, I'm counting down the days...I will be 11 weeks on Sunday, so slowly but surely I'm getting there. :) I just have to say how wonderful Andy has been through all of this, he is more understanding and helpful than I could have ever hoped for and is absolutely thrilled with the prospect of welcoming another child into our family. It's times like these that make my love for him grow exponentially! :)

As if that weren't big enough news, there's more...

Back to Andy feeling a strong call into full time ministry. After loosing his job in May and working at a job that has been a huge trial in and of itself (not to say that we aren't grateful for the simple fact that he has a job...we truly are). A job that has taken him away from his family in a way that has been very difficult on all of us and that has tested him in every way possible, we are simply thrilled and still in a bit of disbelief to share that he officially quite on Monday! All of those "impossible" things that had to come together to allow him to transition into fully time ministry and still provide for our family, actually came together one by one and beginning next week Andy will be working full time at our church continuing to lead worship and assuming the role of Executive Pastor. For the first time in our almost 11 years of marriage, he will have Saturdays off with the rest of us, holidays will no longer be just the girls and I and the thing that is hands down, the most important to Andy and I...our family...will finally have the time that we have missed out on for so long. We know that with this new chapter in our life, there will be adjustments, a new set of "issues" that we have to tackle and tough seasons, but for now we are choosing to be grateful for the amazing blessings that God has given us. For the first time ever, the girls with have their daddy with them as they hunt for Easter Eggs, BBQ on the 4th of July, trick-or-treat and so much more!

So there you have it. Like I said when I started, it would take forever to write out the whole story, but I really wanted to take some time to not only share what has been going on in our lives, but to also chronicle this amazing time in our lives so that we will always remember how God saw us through the darkest times and used those times to prepare us for some of the most amazing blessings we have ever experienced! There are so many verses that I have held on to during this time, but recently this very short, yet powerful verse has come to mind over and over again.

...sorrow may last for the night, but joy comes in the morning! Psalm 30:5

Andy and I have talked a great deal lately about things that we let "steal our joy" and through the worst of times, we realized that there is only one true source of joy and that is our amazingly faithful God! That is something that no circumstance or person can take away from us!

As I begin to feel better I will do my best to keep up on my posts. This is a very exciting and yes, a little scary time in our life, but we are ready for the journey!

Before I sign off, I will leave you with a glimpse of the sweet little baby growing in my belly...

A warm treat on a snowy day

Last night brought our first snow of the season and although it wasn't much more than a dusting, it was still enough for the girls to bundle up and play in for a while. Their game of choice...sliding down the snow covered slide. ;) By the time they were done they were wet and cold and their little noses resembled Rudolph. And what better to warm them up than a cup of warm homemade peppermint hot chocolate...

Mmmm..Mmmm...

The girls and I have been having a lot of fun working on various "fall" projects over the past few weeks and today we tried our hands at Caramel Apples. I've never made them before so I wasn't sure how "kid friendly" the process was, but I have to say, it was a great thing to do with the girls. We started off by unwrapping the individual caramels, which is something even Chloe was able to help with. After that I made up the caramel and dipped the apples. Then we put the goodies we had for decorating in bowls and the girls went to town. And the best part...there was just enough left over to slice up an apple and dip it in the caramel for a tasty treat!

Here's what we started with...plain caramel apples...

All done...

Goofy girls... ;)

I'm an auntie again!

Meagan and Morgan welcomed their baby boy, Carson, into the world yesterday! I've only seen pictures, but I have to say, he's quite a cutie and already appears to have more hair than his big sister does...or any of his cousins before they were 2 years old for that matter! ;)

We are headed that way next weekend and can't wait to meet the newest member of the family! There's just nothing like a precious little newborn and I can't wait to snuggle him!!

Christmas is coming...

As I do every year around this time, I start to think about the holidays that are quickly approaching. Christmas time is a busy season for just about everyone, but based on the nature of our work in ministry, it's absolutely crazy for us. But the good news is, we love it!

The last few years I have felt "a step behind" during the holiday months, but this year I am determined to be organized and very specific about what November and December will look like for our family. I'm excited to say that we've purchased our first Christmas gift already (yes, only one, but it's a start), I have a list started of gift ideas, and have plans to spend 2 days in November being "crafty" with my mom. My goal is to be done with my gift buying by the end of November, allowing for my annual Black Friday bargain shopping! Oh by the way, I'm so excited that based on Andy's recent schedule change, we will be able to go Black Friday shopping together this year! I can't wait...I'm even thinking of trying to arrange for a sitter for the girls, although I'm not quite sure who I can get to show up at my house at 4 a.m. on the day after Thanksgiving ;) Maybe a sleepover...

The holidays have always been one of my favorite times of the year, but as I get older and life gets busier I realize that much of what this time of year represents is lost in the hussle and bussle of just plain busyness. My top priority this year is to plan well in order to allow us time as a family to take in the awe of such a beautiful time of year. An Advent chain that tells the story of the birth of Jesus, gifts hand made with love, bed time stories about the the Shepherds, family movie nights of old time classics, sitting by the Christmas tree with Andy after the girls are in bed and being a part of bringing true hope, encouragement and celebration to families who will join us for our Christmas Eve services at church...those are the things that will create life time memories and those are the things that we are going to focus on and plan for this year.

Here's to a busy, yet meaningful holiday season!

The Happiest Place on Earth!

Life has been exceptionally busy for us the past few weeks, but right in the middle of all of the organized chaos came a much needed treat...the girls and I joined Art, Rhonda, Rickson, Robert, Nicki, Savannah, Rylee and Ryan for a few days in Disneyland! It would take far too long to write the details of how our trip came about and how many times we didn't think we were going to be able to go, but in the end it worked out and we had such a fun time!

We left Reno on an airplane at 6:00 a.m. on Wednesday (that means the alarm clock went off at 4 a.m.), flew into LAX, caught a shuttle to our hotel, checked in, changed our clothes and were inside of Disneyland by 10:30 a.m. We spent Wednesday and Thursday exploring the parks with everyone, making sure all of the kiddos got to go on their favorite rides (it was different for all of them ;) ) and tried not to melt in the unseasonably hot weather.

Friday, it was just the girls and me and we spent a good part of the day making sure Chloe got to visit with the characters she wanted to see. The weather was a bit cooler which made for a nice day. That night we watched the new World of Color show in California Adventure and it far exceeded my expectations! It was amazing!
We left the park at 11:00 p.m. on Friday, packed all of our stuff back up and were up on Saturday morning at 4:00 a.m. again to catch our 4:30 shuttle back to the airport. We were on the plane just as the sun was rising and were back in Reno at 9:30 on Saturday morning.

Needless to say we were all completely exhausted, but it was so worth it! We scheduled our trip like that because Andy was supposed to come with us, but at the last minute (after we had purchased our airline tickets) he was unable to come due to work. We were really bummed, but he encouraged us to just go and have fun (the girls and I are pretty darn lucky to have someone who loves us so much)!

Our trip was such a blessing and came at just the right time!

Here are a few pictures from our trip...

The "little things"...

It would take me hours to tell of the many changes that have taken place in our family over the past 6 months or so, but suffice to say, "change" is our new middle name! ;)
Seriously though, we have been going through some significant life changes...personally, professionally, spiritually, relationally...you name it, it's changing!

Now I would be lying, as one who will avoid change at all costs, if I said that it hasn't been difficult. But even amidst the trials, there has been an incredible sense of peace that has accompanied this season of our life. A peace that can only come from our firm reliance on God's grace and an unwavering belief that He has a very specific plan for our life, and that this is all part of the journey He has placed us on.

My eyes have been opened to the things in life that really matter and one of those things is my precious family. Andy and the girls have always meant the world to me, but I've come to understand that in the end, if all we have is each other and our faith, we have all we will ever need. With that understanding I have been spending more time focusing on making my home a sacred place where our family can grow. A shelter from the storm if you will. A place where we can be ourselves and share life in all it's joy and pain.

One of the things that I love to do (but haven't done much of in the past few years) is decorate for the holidays, so this year I have committed to finding inexpensive and simple ways to fill our home with the changing seasons. Yesterday Bella and I spent some time creating fall leaves that will end up as garland to hang on our mantle. She searched the internet for other fall crafts and we now have a list of fun crafts to do together. The time that we spent yesterday was priceless and so much more meaningful than the time I used to spend worrying about the insignificant.

In the end, it really is the "little things" that mean the most.

9.25.2010

It's that time of year...

While I welcome to the changing colors, cooler evenings and smell of fall in the air, I could really live without the "sick season" that seems to accompany the changing seasons.

Chloe started running a fever last night and as much as I was hoping to avoid a full blown sickness...no such luck. She was up most of the night (which means I was too) and as of this evening still has a fever and is just generally miserable. She says her head hurts, neck hurts, tummy hurts and she's cold. :( I'm praying that she sleeps well tonight and that I can get a decent nights rest too. A well rested mommy is a much better care taker! ;)

Here's to hoping that we can get this one behind us fairly quickly and maintain a healthy household for the rest of the fall and winter. I know there's no fool proof plan, but this mama's washing her hands, taking her vitamins, drinking her Emergen-C, trying to get good rest and praying that those nasty germs leave us alone!!

9.22.2010

The important things...

Too much time passed, too much life gone by unchronicled, too much attention given to the insignificant...and that's why I'm back. I'm back to write about the things in life that matter...from the monumental to the mundane.

And to get back in the groove, how about a few pictures of the two biggest blessing in our life...our sweet...and yes, sassy girls! ;)

I know these come about a month earlier than expected, but in an attempt to be a step ahead instead of my usual step behind, we already have Halloween costumes purchased and waiting for Octobers festivities. Of course both girls had to try them on and wear them for a while and I couldn't resist snapping a few pictures...

Family Fun!

In an attempt to make this year a "Simple Christmas" and to remember the true meaning of why we are celebrating, I've been trying to do creative, yet fun projects with the girls. This one turned out especially well...it was simple, fun and virtually free! I thought I would share it with those of you who might like to do the same. As you can tell, the concept is nothing new. I simply combined a few different elements and came up with what I think is a great way to count down the days until Christmas. I have a feeling this is going to become a family tradition! Enjoy!

Happy Birthday Grandma!

My moms birthday was on Monday and the girls made a video for her on our new computer. The video was 5 minutes long, but right in the middle Chloe sang her own rendition of "Happy Birthday" to her Grandma. Enjoy...

Happy 7th Birthday Bella!

As hard as it is for me to believe that Bella is 7 years old today, it's true! She has been looking forward to her birthday for several weeks now and had just about every minute of it planned out, starting with how she would wake up to us singing "Happy Birthday" to her this morning! ;)

We have spread the celebration out a bit, spending the evening as a family with dinner at Claim Jumper (her choice), gifts from us and a movie at home (we're introducing her to one of our all time favorites, Goonies). Tomorrow is breakfast at IHOP and then preparing for a sleepover with a few of her friends!

It's hard to for me to express in words how grateful I am to be her mom. She is such a kind hearted girl and it's such a joy to see her grown in to her own little person. I have so many more thoughts, but am going to leave it at that for tonight. I want to get back to watching the movie and cuddling with my favorite people!

Here are a few pics from tonight...

And of course I can't end this post without a very special birthday wish to our favorite 5 year old...Kendra! Kendra and Bella not only share a birthday, but have a very special connection to each other. They were wishing each other a Happy Birthday on the phone at 7:30 this morning! We love you Kendra and hope this is a very special year for you! :)

The sweetest thing...

Even in the midst of some of the tougher things that life can hand us, I can't help but feel overwhelmingly blessed every time I look at these two beautiful faces.

And with 2 energetic kiddos, it's rare to get a decent picture of the three of us, so even though stairs aren't the greatest background, I'm thrilled to have a picture with my girls...

Summer Fun!

Bella and I have passes to the Waterpark this year and the girls and I have been going every Friday. We are having such a great time with our weekly Waterpark trip, but yesterday it got even better...Andy joined us! We started our day with lunch at Fuddruckers and then headed across the street for a full day of fun! Bella was thrilled to be able to take Andy and I on her favorite rides and Andy and I was even able to check out a few rides myself! Our day ended with a quick trip to Costco, a yummy dinner at home and an early night to bed...we were all exhausted! Here are a few pics from our day...

Happy Mother's Day!

What a day I've had so far! It started at 5:30 a.m. with the sound of my alarm. I was up and out of the house early as usual. The morning brought with it major technical issues at church and one of the craziest and stressful Sunday's we've had in a long time. As usual, God showed up and although things didn't go as we had planned, they ended up going just as God had planned...imagine that! ;)

Andy and the girls came to first service and then left to run some errands and head home. When I got home Andy had BBQ hot dogs waiting for me (yes, I requested hot dogs for my Mother's Day lunch), along with a beautiful arrangement of flowers in the center of the table and my gifts from Bella.

We had a wonderful lunch and then I opened my gifts. Bella made me a painting of herself on clay! ;) Better than the gift though, were her cards that she made for me. The first one said, "Dear Mom, Thank you for helping me through my life. You are the best mom ever. Love Bella". "...helping me through my life." I have no idea where she comes up with this stuff, but it cracks me up and I LOVE IT!! The second card was with my flowers and it said, "Dear Mom, This is from me and dad and Chloe. This is a special surprise for yo u and Happy Mother's Day to you. Thanks for being my mom." And on the back of the bag she made to put my gift in she wrote, "I love you. You are the best mom ever. I love you so much that I can't stand it!" I love that girl so much and I can't tell you how much it made my day to read what she wrote. What a special treasure!

Of course the whole time Chloe sat in her chair eating her hot dog, repeating "Hot Dog! Hot Dog!" over and over! ;)

Anyways, I feel so blessed today. I have a wonderful husband and two fabulous daughters. I feel so grateful and content right now and I can't express how grateful I am for that. Just a few years ago, in the midst of infertility and loss I felt like there was something missing, something I longed to desperately for. I can't say that I will ever understand God's plans or timing for my life, but I do know that His plan is perfect. Even in the most difficult times. I looked back at my journal for 2006 to see what life was like for me this time of year. I wrote this and I want to share it. I was studying this verse while preparing to teach a class at church. The verse is Jeremiah 29: 10-14. The Message version says this...

“I know what I’m doing. I have it all planned out – plans to take care of you, not abandon you, plans to give you the future you hope for. “When you call on me, when you come and pray to me, I’ll listen.” “When you come looking for me, you’ll find me.” “Yes, when you get serious about finding me and want it more than anything else, I’ll make sure you won’t be disappointed.” God’s Decree. “I’ll turn things around for you. I’ll bring you back from all the countries into which I send you off into exile. You can count on it.”

I've been working on this for a while, but when I read it today I was struck by the last part..."I'll turn things around for you....You can count on it!" How awesome is it that we have a God who cares about each one of us so much! He cares about our individual needs, desires, hurts and joys and he tells us that if we call out to Him and are serious in seeking him that we won't be disappointed. Now I know this doesn't mean we will get whatever we want, but it does mean that He will give us exactly what we need and in the end it will be enough. Our God is SO good!!

Today I can honestly say that God has given me "exactly what I need" and in the end, "it was enough"! I'm always amazed when I look back and see how I have come through different times in my life. I'm so thankful that time heals, but at the same time leaves us with just a touch of the pain so that we will never forget what it means to be cradled in the arms of God and to experience His love for us.

So, with that, Happy Mother's Day to all the "moms" out there. If today brings with it hurt and heartache, hold tight to the One who can heal all wounds and continue to trust that God has an amazing plan and purpose for your life!

Chloe's "School Pictures"

About a month ago the Preschool had their school pictures and they were kind enough to take pictures of Chloe and Kyra as well.

Without further ado...here is Chloe in her first official "School Picture". ;)

Money Watch

Andy was on the "Money Watch" segment of the local news tonight. He was promoting a class called Financial Peace University that we have at the church and also a one time event, Town Hall for Hope that we are hosting tomorrow. In addition to this short interview he took calls for an hour and answered peoples questions about their finances.

Easter 2009

What a crazy, busy, fun-filled week we've had! Most of it revolved around the preparations at work for our Easter weekend. We had Good Friday service on Friday, our 2nd Annual Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday and Easter Sunday services on Sunday! It's amazing the amount of work that went into preparing but it was definitely worth it!

Chloe seems to have started a tradition of having some sort of stomach issue on Easter. Last year she puked all over herself and her dress at church and this year she pooped all over herself (we're talking up the back, fill the white sandals kind of poop). This was all before I had snapped a single picture of the girls. Needless to say, I was pretty upset. After a little meltdown I pulled myself together and threw her clothes in the washer at the church. We managed to get them dry just before the end of second service and like nothing had ever happened, she was back in her pretty dress. :)

The girls had a great time after we got home of hunting for eggs, checking out the goodies the Easter Bunny left in their baskets and of course, eating WAY too much candy! :)

Here is a short slide show of some of our Easter fun!
